Trash & Recycling Schedule

Find your street on the “Street List” image below. The day it falls under is the typical day your trash will be picked up.

Recycling is picked up every other week on the same day that your trash is picked up. Use the Recycling & Holiday calendar below to see which weeks recycling will be picked up on (weeks highlighted in green).

Certain holidays will delay your pick up by one day. Holidays that affect pick up are circled on the Recycling & Holiday Calendar below.

When a holiday falls on a Monday, all scheduled pickups will be delayed by one day. When a holiday falls on any other day of the week, everything from the holiday on will be delayed by one day.

For example: Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday, Thursday collection will be delayed until Friday and Friday collection will be on Saturday.

The following holidays affect the 2022 Trash and Recycling schedule:

New Years Day January 1, 2022
Memorial Day May 30, 2022

What If I Have Big Items I Need Removed?

You can fill out a form here to schedule a curbside pickup for your item(s) if they fall under the acceptable item list. For assistance with bulk pickup, please contact dprather@republicservices.com. The bulk collection is for burnable items (there is no charge for these items) and includes things such as:

  • Furniture, Recliners, Loveseats, Wooden Tables, Chairs, Burnable Items etc.
  • Due to the Mass DEP waste bans, tires can no longer be collected as a bulk item.
  • Effective November 1, 2022, mattresses, box springs and mattress toppers cannot be picked up as part of the bulk program. This is a statewide regulation that applies to every city and town. Republic Services can pick up and dispose of mattresses for $150.00 fee per mattress. Additional suggestions for disposal of prohibited items can be found on BoH section of Town of Monson website @ www.monson-ma.gov/board-health
  • If you are unsure if your item will be accepted, please call Republic Services for assistance at 413-557-6700.
  • If your item is an unaccepted item, the Board of Health suggests the following as resources:

What Do I Put In My Recycle Bin?

  • Metal Food & Beverage Cans – Emptied & Rinsed
  • Aluminum Foil & Empty Aerosol Cans (from non-hazardous products)
  • Plastic Bottles, Jars, Jugs & Tubs (smaller than 2.5 gallons only) – Emptied & Rinsed (replace caps)
  • Glass Bottles & Jars – Emptied & Rinsed (labels are ok)
  • Paper & Cardboard – Empty & Flattened (Newspaper, inserts, magazines, junk mail, paperback books are ok)

Do I Have To Separate My Recyclables?

Once you receive your new recycling bin in November of 2022, the service will be Single Stream, which means you do not have to separate your recycled materials.  Please refer to the “Recycling Upgrade” in the next section for more information.

Prior to receiving the new bin, items need to be sorted into two bins (be sure NOT to bag any of your items):

Coming to Monson - November 2022

Two new trash barrels will be supplied to each program participant. The barrel (Republic refers to these as carts) for solid waste holds 65 gallons and the recycling cart holds 95 gallons. These carts have specific dimensions allowing Republic to use automation on their trucks. Motorized arms will pick up, empty and then return your trash carts to the curb.

trash and recycle bins

Our town supports recycling, so the recycling cart is sized to hold more materials. Moving more eligible waste to recycling will reduce overall costs to the town and keep fees steady. You will no longer be required to separate your recycling. After you receive your two official Republic issued carts, please do not use any non-Republic carts. Those containers will not be picked up!

The process for bulk pickup will remain the same.  Please see above for information on how to schedule a bulk pickup.

All recyclables will be placed in the 95-gallon cart.  There is no need to separate your recyclables!  And no need to separate different materials from each other, like a metal handle on a plastic bucket.

FAQ

Carts will be delivered to your home address by Republic Services beginning November 1, 2022 for people who are currently participating in the program.  It may take a few days for all carts to be delivered.

The main reason is cost.  It is much cheaper to rent the carts than to purchase them.  Rented carts that are damaged through no fault of your own will be replaced for free.

There are two reasons: the first is that recycling will only be picked up bi-weekly, so there is a good chance there will be a higher volume of recycling than trash.  The second is to promote recycling.  Recycling reduces the tonnage of trash being picked up, and this ultimately reduces the rate and costs for our residents.

No.  Please do not mark your cart in any way as these are rented from Republic Services.

If you choose not to participate in the Town of Monson’s trash and recycling program, you may fill out an abatement with the Town Hall and must provide proof of other services.

No.  The carts are identified with different covers.  Please only use the trash cart for trash and the recycling cart for your recyclables.

Trash must be bagged, but trash only.  Please do no bag your recyclables.  They should be placed in the recycling cart as-is.

Please call Republic Services at 413-557-6700 first for all trash related issues.

There will be no increase in cost this year.  The rate is set each year based on the tonnage of trash. If the town exceeds the projected solid waste tonnage, there will be additional fees assessed. Diligent recycling REDUCES solid waste tonnage and ultimately your costs. Please recycle!

The BoH suggests that you work with the two you were given for a few weeks before  requesting a larger solid waste cart. You may be able to recycle items that you previously included in the “regular trash”. The recycling cart is larger for this reason.

The BoH recommends repurposing the barrels (e.g. using for sand/salt in the winter.)  If you cannot repurpose or have no space for your current barrels, Republic Services will be picking them up in the future as part of standard trash.  Dates to be announced.
