In honor of Black History Month, we’re touring Pelourinho, the historical center of Salvador in Bahia, Brazil. This is considered to be the most African City in Brazil and Pelourinho is at the heart of the nation’s Black History.
Together, we’ll walk, talk, and experience the afro-heritage in Bahia, through exploration of music, food, and art. Starting in front of Sao Francisco Chuch – the most famous “gold” church in Brazil – you will see the first Black Association in Brazil, an institution that was fundamental for the survival of many blacks in the post-abolition period. Here we’ll discuss our first Black History Hero: Manoel Querino.
Continuing through the streets of Salvador we’ll visit the Escola do Olodum (School of Olodum) and listen to the Samba Reggae of Mestre Neguinho do Samba. Our tour wraps up in Pelourinho Square, where enslaved Africans were sold long ago—today it is famous for being the place to celebrate our Afro Brazilian Culture.
